A great friend and supporter of my art approached me a little bit ago and wanted me to make him a piece. This guy is by no means a sneakerhead but he definitely loves his Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66's for their distinct styling and comfort. One of the things I pride myself in when it comes to my art is not only understanding what the sneakers look like in detail but knowing their history. The Mexico 66 is quite the unassuming shoe but they have a rich history that marks the beginning of not only their parent company, Asics... but another familiar Sportswear Company: Nike.
I love the Back to the Future Franchise so of course, as a sneakerhead, the Nike AirMag is one of my favorite sneakers of all time... I mean, Grail status. Marty's Nike AirMag's from the future was definitely on my list of sneakers to make so I started figured there's not time better than the present. This piece actually started quite a while ago after getting many requests from my fans and clients. The panels themselves are fairly simple, not too many lines or different colors. The real trick was the lights... how am I going to do this??
The first piece I ever tried to make was an Air Jordan 1 Black toe on this long shelf made out of particle board. I was looking at the piece (which I still have today) and was thinking, "I wonder what it would look like if I were to make that now?." In honor of the OG Chicago one coming out that weekend, I decided to make the piece.
